Overwhelm isn’t a personality flaw. It’s unpaid mental invoices.

I had 14 browser tabs open when I wrote this email.

And honestly? That's pretty good for me. Last week I counted 47 tabs on my laptop. I'm not even joking.

My wife asked me why I don't just close them. I told her "because I might need them later." She rolled her eyes.

But here's the thing...

The tabs on my computer aren't the real problem. It's the tabs in my BRAIN that screw everything up.

You probably have a bunch of them open right now too. Unfinished projects. Half-started ideas. Things you told yourself you'd do "when you have time."

I call these open loops. And they're exhausting.

It's like being a waiter carrying 27 plates at once. Except the plates are invisible. And you can never put them down.

So when someone asks "why can't I just focus?" it's not because you suck at focus. It's because your brain is trying to remember all those plates while ALSO doing the thing you sat down to do.

That's why you feel tired before you even start working.

Jess told me last week: "I want to start...but I don't even know where to start."

Mike said: "I'm doing stuff...but none of it is moving the needle."

Same issue. Too many open loops.

Your brain treats unfinished things like pending threats. Not because they're actually dangerous. But because your brain doesn't know the difference between "I forgot to reply to that email" and "there's a tiger behind me."

Both get filed under: HANDLE THIS NOW.

So even when you sit down to work, your brain's already running a marathon in the background.

That's the problem.

Once you see it, you can fix it.

⚙️ Tactical Application: The “Close One Tab” Method (10 minutes)

Step 1: Write your current open tabs (2 minutes) 🧠

On paper, list what’s floating around in your head:

  • “Pick a niche”

  • “Start a newsletter”

  • “Make a freebie”

  • “Post on Instagram”

  • “Learn SEO”

  • “Set up a website”

  • “Figure out what to sell”

Messy is fine. Ugly is fine. Fast is the goal.

Step 2: Circle the ONE that pays off fastest (1 minute) 🎯

Ask: “If I made progress on only ONE thing today… which one would give me the biggest relief or result?”

Not your dream tab.
Your fastest payoff tab.

Examples:

  • Need money? → choose your offer + outreach

  • Need clarity? → write your “I help…” statement

  • Need momentum? → draft one email/post

  • Need leads? → outline a simple freebie

Step 3: Park the rest in a “Later List” (2 minutes) 🅿️

This is the magic trick.

You’re not deleting those ideas.
You’re telling your brain: “We’re safe. It’s saved.”

Write: LATER LIST
Dump the remaining tabs there.

Now your brain stops screaming like a smoke alarm with low batteries.

Step 4: Choose today’s next right task (15 minutes) ⏱️

Pick a tiny next action for the ONE tab you circled.

It must be doable in 15 minutes.

Examples:

  • “Write 3 niche options”

  • “Draft my ‘I help…’ sentence”

  • “Outline my freebie in bullets”

  • “Write the first paragraph of my email”

  • “Message one person about a service offer”

Set a timer. Do the thing. Stop when the timer ends.

Step 5: Text yourself this sentence (10 seconds) 📲

“Progress counts even when it’s small.”

Yes, it’s cheesy.
Yes, it works.
Your future self needs receipts when the week gets loud.

🧭 Intelligent Elevation: Why this matters (especially for parents)

Most business advice assumes you have:

  • long uninterrupted hours

  • a calm nervous system

  • a fully charged brain

  • and a personal assistant named “Free Time”

Parents have… none of that.

So your advantage isn’t “doing more.”
